Chestnut filly 2005 TRANS ISLAND ex VELVET APPEAL (PETORIUS)

Purchase price: 42,000euros Goffs Sportsman’s and Bonus Yearling Sale 2006 (Lot 895)

Tweenhills Racing Ownership: 50%

Trainer: Sir Mark Prescott Bt, Newmarket

If ever there has been a mare who should have produced a stakes horse it is Velvet Appeal. She has produced five runners who are all rated over 83 with Craiova being the best and recording a highest rating of 99. There is also a nice up-date since David purchased this filly as the Fasliyev two-year-old, The Illies, has since won twice under the care of Barry Hills. There are also plenty of other two-year-old winners under the first dam as three of the off-spring have won at the juvenile age.

Velvet Appeal herself was also no slouch as a two-year-old as she was placed fourth in the Moyglare Stakes (Gr 1) in 1996 before recording three wins in her three-year-old season. She is by the fast son of Mummy’s Pet, Petorius. Velvet Appeal’s own-sister Sapieha was also a very smart performer, winning at Grade One level in South Africa as well as winning the Horris Hill Stakes (Gr 3) at Newbury at two years. Velvet Appeal also has a high-class half-sister in Dajraan, who proved to be a Group 2 winner over 15f. The pedigree in fact traces to one of the smartest and active families in Europe as Russian Rhythm, Cape Cross, Diktat, Desirable and Alydaress are just a few examples of the Group One winners that stem from it.

Trans Island may not be considered as the most precocious sire at stud but none the less he has some impressive 2006 two-year-old statistics. He had 9 winners from 22 starters which gives you a ratio of 41% of winners to runners. Trans Island has also had his fair share of Stakes winners with Kamakiri, who won the Classic trial The Free Handicap Stakes (Listed) in 2005 and recorded a Timeform Rating of 104. Other stakes winners include Moyenne and Royal Island. Trans Island himself, trained by Ian Balding, was a stakes winner at two winning the Prix du Haras de la Huderie (Listed) at Deauville’s August meeting over 7f.

This son of Selkirk stayed at the sprint trip of 7 to 8 furlongs for the rest of his career and was unlucky to be disqualified from first and placed second in the Premio Paroli (Gr 2) in Rome at three-years, before getting back into winning ways at Group 2 level at four years in France. This big, good boned horse retired to stud in 2001 after his impressive second in the Group One Lockinge Stakes at Newbury at five years.

Finally this Tweenhills yearling filly has been bred on clever lines as Velvet Appeal has a duplication of 6x4 to Money For Nothing in the pedigree. This comes about as Money For Nothing is the 5th dam of Trans Island and Velvet Appeal’s grand sire is Mummy’s Pet who is also out of the same mare, Money For Nothing.
